ACHALAIVery inspiring was the first face-to-face meeting of the ACHALAI project (Collaborative Action for the ancient pre-Hispanic musical Recovery by the harmonization of research and technology), that took place on July 7th to 9th at the offices of REUNA, in Chile. About twenty people, including musicians, physicists, engineers and social communicators from Ibero-America gathered in Santiago to define the guidelines of the research for the next two years.

The project aims to establish a research network integrated by institutions from Spain, Peru, Bolivia, Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Mexico and Chile, including the academic networks members of RedCLARA (such as REUNA) in order to apply information technology to obtain the sounds of instruments from the past, which because of their texture and the environment of preservation, are not in conditions to be play directly.

During the work sessions held in Santiago the academics were divided into three committees according to their specialty: commission of Pre-Hispanic acoustic and selection of instruments, commission of modeling and technology and commission of visibility, making in all cases significant progress, which are a reflection of the enthusiasm aroused by the project on the participants.

The commission of Pre-Hispanic acoustic agreed that the instruments to be chosen as object of research should be wind instruments that represent all Latin American countries. In addition and as an added value this group of specialists will generate in parallel to the research a protocol for the use of the instruments in their original format.

The commission of modeling and technology undertook the work of reproduce the sounds of the instruments selected by the group of musicians and to present them in a didactic way, in order that interested people have the possibility of meet and / download them through the web.

Finally, the commission of visibility presented three proposals of logo for ACHALAI, among which the participants chose an image inspired by a Hispanic ocarina. The group also established the guidelines for communication, informative products and the central structure of the Web site.

During the evaluation, REUNA project assistant manager, Paulina Lopez made a positive balance of the meeting "the attendees were very enthusiastic and worked the issues with great dedication."

Great potential

Happy and grateful for the opportunity to be part of this challenge were the Latin American researchers involved in the meeting. "For small colleges like ours, be part of this kind of initiatives is the easiest way to get connected with the world, and to join international projects", stated Celso Recalde, from the Universidad Nacional de Chimborazo, from Ecuador.

Francesco De Mattia, who is the director of the project and came from Italy, reminded his colleagues that ACHALAI is inspired by ASTRA project developed in Europe that achieved the virtually rebuilt of the Epigonio sound, an instrument used in ancient Greece. De Mattia affirmed that once the research concluded the results were presented in several concerts with great success, and some of them were transmitted through academic networks. "The ASTRA project was an initiative developed by only three or four people and had great achievements, I think that all of us together can do amazing things, I will be waiting for that to happen," he said.

Julio Lopez, academic of the University La Frontera, from Chile, was very interested in contributing to this conjunction of music and implementing models. Besides, he added, "one of my hobbies is music, so this is a topic that fascinates me."

Pichimuchina

As part of this meeting, the group visited the Chilean Museum of Pre-Columbian Art in Santiago, an activity that ended with a musical performance of the group Pichimuchina, led by musician and researcher José Pérez de Arce, which is also member of ACHALAI. The concert covered ancient musical expressions of northern, central and southern countries of Chile. The presentation offered a recreation of the sound roots of the native people: It evoked the blow, the primary rhythms and the songs to the divinity.
