Latin America has now a Resource Operation Center PDF Print E-mail
Written by Tania Altamirano
The ROC-LA is an initiative of the National Autonomous University of Mexico, Los Andes University in Colombia and the Brazilian Center for Physic research, which began operating in September 30th and that fills a gap in relation to the still fledgling and scattered activities of GRID in Latin America.

ROC-LAWith the planned closure of the operations of the ROC-CERN on late March 2010 and following the completion of the EGEE project of the European Commission, the National Autonomous University of Mexico, Los Andes University in Colombia and the Brazilian Center for Physic research undertook the challenge of creating a Resource Operation Center for Latin America.

The ROC-LA, started operating on September 30th 2009 and fills a gap in relation to the still fledgling and scattered activities of GRID in Latin America, is a response from the Latin American community of High Energy Physics to the need of having the necessary support to add its computing capacity to the Grid infrastructure, contributing to the efforts of the international collaborations and to address the activities of groups involved in the experiments of LHC at CERN.

This is a joint initiative of three institutions which house groups participating in LHC experiments and is, from conception, regardless of possible funding from joint projects with the European Community, which allows the existence and operation of the ROC-LA is guaranteed by the founding institutions, with technical staff who is also permanent staff of the respective institutions.

Since its inception, the ROC-LA is a distributed structure, with the hardware and administration shared between the three institutions that shape it, according to current trends of GRID, which point to the creation of regional operation centers or inside the countries within national GRID initiatives or NGI. It is hoped that with the spread of GRID activities in our region, the ROC-LA serves as a seed for the creation of national ROCs.

Technicians and engineers participating have been trained by the staff of the ROC-CERN, with the support of both CERN and the three participating institutions. As such, technicians and engineers of the ROC-LA is committed to the development of GRID in Latin America and consequently, the three institutions are committed to provide the necessary support for new institutions and / or groups attempting to set up their sites GRID the region.
