During the XLI General Assembly of the Organization of American States (OAS) held in San Salvador, El Salvador from 5 to 7 of June 2011, Member States agreed that "Connecting the Americas: Partners for Prosperity" will be the central theme of the Sixth Summit of the Americas to be held in Cartagena de Indias, Colombia onĀ  and April 14-15, 2012.

OEA themeAccording to the speech of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Colombian Republic, Maria Angela Holguin, who announced the theme, this includes an integral manner the objectives of unity and integration plan to achieve through further development of infrastructure and full exercise of the partnership. "It statement is consistent with the advances of modernity that characterizes the twenty-first century, and presents the image of our region as a group of nations willing to expand and strengthen its ties and interaction, and to benefit from greater access and better use of technology and information, " she said.

In her remarks, the Minister mentioned that the Declaration of the VI Summit will be brief, concrete and results-oriented and that the mandates will be individual chapters on the subtopics, which include:

  • Reducing poverty and increasing equality;
  • Reducing insecurity;
  • Access to information technologies; and
  • Fund for Disasters Prevention.
